Brief Description of Assignment |
: |
The agricultural sector plays a vital role in the economic growth of Bangladesh and majority of the Bangladeshi people depend on farming for livelihood. With 39% of Bangladeshi adults being tobacco consumers of any kind results in tobacco being a profitable cash crop since the 1960s. Despite knowing the deleterious effects of tobacco consumption such as cancers, stroke, heart attack, hypertension, etc., and the government’s various tobacco control programs, tobacco leaf remains an important agricultural crop and it continues largely through many different multinational tobacco companies.
There are also serious consequences of tobacco farming on human health and the environment as tobacco farming-related agricultural processes pollute the air, and lead to deforestation and soil degradation. And have a negative impact on the ecosystem including biodiversity. On the contrary, the government aims to have a tobacco-free Bangladesh by 2040 and have several programs and recent taxation changes on tobacco products. But the farmers should also beware of the deleterious effect of tobacco farming on their health and the environment.
Owing to the above, Health Economics Unit planned to conduct a study titled “Health and Environmental Consequences of Tobacco Farming Awareness of and Alternative Livelihood for Tobacco Farmers” to find the factors behind farmer’s choice of tobacco cultivation, measuring awareness level and health status of the farmers, environmental consequences of tobacco farming, and to explore the scope and opportunity of alternative economic livelihoods for them.
