The scope of civil works under the Investment Project includes the Improvement of the existing 2-Lane Dhaka–Sylhet National Highway over the length of approximately 210 km into a 4-Lane divided carriageway National Highway with Service Lanes on both sides. To widen the existing Dhaka-Sylhet highway corridor RHD engaged design consultants to finalize the alignment, design the new road and prepared necessary documents to implement the project. Because of high dependency of people on natural resources and widespread poverty, the social and environmental impacts are visibly significant, particularly when construction works are undertaken in subproject areas. The environmental and social risks will be triggered by land acquisition, displacement/damage of permanent assets and loss of land, loss of forest, biodiversity and agricultural land, effect to water sources due to sedimentation and water logging etc for the project. These problems are apparent not only during construction but also during operation phase. To widen the existing Dhaka-Sylhet highway corridor RHD engaged design consultants to finalize the alignment, design the new road and prepared necessary documents to implement the project including RP, IEE, EIA, SIA, EMP etc. Therefore, it is necessary to engage individual consultant to review and make necessary improvements on social safeguard documents before going to start the physical work and help PIU to monitor the social safeguards related issues during implementation.
